The Clay Studio was founded in 1974 by five artists in need of workspace. Their first home, on the 100 block of Orianna St, was destroyed by fire in 1980. They moved to 47-49 N 2nd St in 1981, becoming a teaching institution as well as artist space. In 1990, The Clay Studio moved to 137-139 N. 2nd Street, and established more professional studios, a shop, and gallery spaces to serve an expanding roster of artists and students.
The Clay Studio has become an internationally recognized non-profit institution. With their 30 year lease on N 2nd St coming due, and the need for more space, the Clay Studio decided it was time to move. A major fundraising campaign commenced and a new, larger, home is under construction on N. American St. in South Kensington.
Earlier occupants of the building include Clement Restein Co, who occupied 133-39 N 2nd from, at least 1900 - 1915. They specialized in belting, hoses & packing materials.
From (approx.) 1917 - 1925, Royal Upholstered Furniture occupied 137 N 2nd St. The company was bought by Jamestown Upholstery Furniture Co. in 1926, which is still in existence in Jamestown, NY.
137 N 2nd St was built c. 1855; the date for 139 N 2nd is unknown, but a new front facade and rear addition were done for owner I. West in 1922. Both buildings are on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places.
