The Penn’s View Hotel, at 14 N Front Street on the south side of Church Street, was built as a shipping warehouse in 1828. 14 N Front is a 5-story (4 stories plus a 2nd Empire mansard roof) building.
Stephenson & Craft, importers and dealers in "Wool, Noils, Hair & Waste" occupied the building at the turn of the century. (Noil is the short fiber left over from combing wool.)
The ground floor became a hardware store in the 1900's and then a coffeehouse in the 1950s. The building sat vacant for many years until chef Carlo C. Sena bought and refurbished it as a boutique hotel in 1989.
In 1993, 16 N Front St (built in 1780) was added to the hotel and in 1999, 18 N Front (built in 1836) was also added.
