National Mechanics Bar, 22 S 3rd St

franklinbridgenort

Designed by William Strickland, one of the most prominent American architects of the early nineteenth century, the Mechanics’ Bank at 22 S. 3rd Street is an outstanding example of the adaptation of the Greek temple form. In 1814, the National Mechanics Bank was organized by a group of mechanics and craftsmen. The existing banks at the time were uninterested in their business and wouldn't provide loans to small businesses.

After 20+ years they outgrew their first building & in 1836 they hired Strickland to build a new bank at 22 S 3rd St. Opening in 1837, the bank occupied the building until 1903 when the bank dissolved. Subsequent owners rented the building to various other banks until the depression. The Norwegian Seamen’s Mission bought it in 1930 and completely remodeled it, including a 2 story brick addition in the rear. It functioned as a chapel and social service center for sailors until 1982 when the dwindling congregation moved to Old Swedes’ Church in South Philadelphia and sold the building. After twenty-five years as Club Revival and several other short lived bars, the building has been home to National Mechanics Bar & Restaurant since 2007.
