232 - 234 Market St.

In 1836 John B. Myers and John W. Claghorn established an auction and commission merchant business at the corner of Market St & Bank St (232 Market). A new, larger, building (232 - 234 Market St. was built in 1861 in the Italian Renaissance style.

By 1862 J.S. Bunting owned the building, which he also used as an auction house. It was known by various names until 1886. The Pearl Shirt Factory owned by Samuel Sternberger was there after that and then L.H. Parke Co., coffee & tea importers from 1898 - 1921. From 1921 till 1954 L.H. Parke was located at 1133 N. Front St. In July 2012, a fire at the former Front Street location destroyed the complex of eight buildings.

232 - 234 Market was renovated as a Horn & Hardart restaurant in 1939, which for many years was open 24 hrs. Horn and Hardart's closed in 1971.

The building housed Stanley Hardware store until 1997, then, starting in 2000, Tangerine Restaurant and currently Kick Axe Throwing. It was placed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places on November 4, 1976.
