George D. Ellis & Sons Inc., founded in 1843 and incorporated in 1887 was initially located at 229 - 231 Vine St. The company manufactured mechanics' tools, trusses and elastic metals, Tanners', curriers' and shoemakers' tools; box scrapers ; tin cans, metal stampings, and metal specialties ; "Union" tools ; oil delivery equipment ; oil cans and gas cans.
In the 1920's, George D. Ellis & Sons, Inc. rebranded as Ellisco, Inc., and in the 1950's, they left Old City and opened manufacturing facilities in Pennsauken, NJ and North Philly. In 1986 Ellisco was acquired by CSS Industries. By this time, Ellisco manufactured metal containers for shoe polish, paint, food, and specialty applications. U.S. Can bought Ellisco in 1994 and moved their production to Baltimore and in 2006 the brand moved to Ball Corp. who bought US Can.
