161 - 163 N 3rd St

161 - 163 N 3rd St is a 5-story, 4-bay, Flemish-bond brick, Federal building with a 6- bay storefront. It was built c. 1815. Originally a 3 story building, it was raised two stories, c. 1854 by Joseph Rubicam.


Kline, Savidge Co. was a manufacturer, importer and wholesale dealer in horse saddlery and harnesses. Founded by Frank M. Kline and Charles H. Savidge, the company was located at 161-163 N 3rd St beginning around 1900. Early on they sold items such as horse blankets and riding equipment; in later years they sold automotive supplies. They lasted until the mid 1970's.


The building was listed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places on December 31, 1984. Currently, the building houses Sassafras Market (since 1998) on the 1st floor and apartments on the upper floors.
