151 N 3rd St. (currently Blokes Barbershop)

Jacob Frishmuth started his tobacco business in 1810 in a long-lost building at 3rd and Callowhill Streets, selling chewing and smoking tobacco. By 1850, Jacob's two sons were running the business as Frishmuth Bros. & Co. That year, the company moved to a building that still stands at 151 North 3rd Street. In 1864, adjoining buildings at 223 & 225 Quarry Street were added to the company headquarters.

In 1875 Frishmuth Bros. & Co. expanded even further, adding 219 & 221 Quarry Street, and employing over 100 workers, producing and distributing seven varieties of chewing tobacco and four varieties of cigarettes.

In 1908, Frishmuth moved into a state of the art facility in North Philadelphia at 17th & Lehigh. They remained there into the 20's, when they moved production to Kentucky.

In 1930's, there is record of Schwartz & Co, a lighting firm, occupying the building. In the 80's & 90's Seaboard Industrial Supply Corp. was at 151 N 3rd. In the 2000's Indigo Arts (now in the Crane Bldg at 1400 N American St) occupied the 150+ year old building. Currently the storefront occupant is Blokes Barbershop. None of the Quarry St buildings still stand.
